The working math is your cannon's solution consumption per hour, times the booked foam hours, plus a 25 percent reserve that never leaves the truck. There's no universal number because cannons, dilution ratios, and run styles vary wildly, which is exactly why the answer is a measurement of your rig, not a figure from a forum. Measure once, write it down, and the question is solved for the season.
Why the forum numbers don't transfer
Consumption depends on at least four things that differ between operations: the cannon's output and how thirsty its design runs, the concentrate's dilution ratio, which ranges meaningfully between brands, whether the crew runs continuous foam or waves of it, and conditions, since wind and heat eat foam faster and tempt the crew to run heavier. Two operators with "a foam cannon" can burn concentrate at rates a multiple apart. Your number exists, and it's in your driveway, not online.
Measuring your real burn rate
One test, twenty minutes, at the shop:
- Mix a known quantity of solution at your exact ratio.
- Run the cannon the way a party actually runs, including the pauses, for a timed twenty minutes.
- Measure what's left, and multiply the used amount by three for your hourly rate.
- Do it once more on a party day by simply noting what a real one-hour party consumed, and reconcile the two numbers. The party number wins.
Now the per-party math is arithmetic: hourly rate times booked hours, plus the reserve. Write the rate on the wall of the shop, put it in the load list, and recheck it once a season or whenever the cannon, the concentrate brand, or the ratio changes.
The reserve rule
Load 25 percent over the calculated need, and treat the reserve as truck equipment rather than party supply: it lives on the truck all season and gets replenished when touched, so it can't be forgotten on a load-out. The reserve exists for the windy day, the client who buys thirty more minutes at the curb on a day that allows it, and the measuring error that hasn't happened yet. Running dry at minute forty of a booked hour is the single most memorable supply failure in this business, remembered by everyone, photographed by no one kindly.
Buying and stocking across a season
Once the per-party number is real, season planning is multiplication: parties on the calendar, times fluid per party, sanity-checked monthly against what's actually on the shelf. The habits that keep it boring:
- A reorder point, not a reorder panic. When the shelf hits enough for the next two weekends, order. Concentrate has a shelf life measured comfortably in seasons when stored sealed and out of the sun, so buying ahead is safe.
- Bulk pricing follows volume. Per-gallon cost drops meaningfully at case and drum quantities, and once the calendar shows a real season, buying concentrate like a consumable business input instead of a weekly errand is one of the easiest margin improvements available.
- One brand at a time. Ratios and foam quality differ, and a mid-season brand switch resets your burn rate math and occasionally your foam quality mid-party. Test a new brand in the off-season, at the shop, next to the old one.
- Count it in the pricing. Fluid per party is a line in the cost-up worksheet, and if it's a rounding error there, either the measurement or the price is wrong.
